Some cool facts about bottlenose dolphins

  • Unique Identities: Every individual develops a –unique signature whistle within its first months, which functions much like a human name and can be remembered by other dolphins for over 20 years.
  • Unihemispheric Sleep: They sleep with only half of their brain at a time, keeping one eye open to watch for predators and remember to surface for air.
  • Skin Shedding: To stay streamlined and reduce drag, they shed their outer layer of skin approximately every two hours.
  • No Chewing: Despite having 72 to 104 cone-shaped teeth, they do not chew their food. They swallow fish whole, always head-first to ensure the scales and spines don’t snag their throats.
  • Long Lifespans: In the wild, they typically live 40 to 60 years, with some females outliving males and giving birth into their 40s.
  • Intelligence & Behavior
Tool Use: Dolphins in Shark Bay, Australia, have been observed wearing sponges on their snouts to protect them while foraging for food on the rocky seafloor.
  • Echolocation: They use high-frequency clicks (up to 1,000 per second) to “see” with sound, allowing them to determine an object’s size, shape, and even density, such as metal inside a human body.
  • Social Structure: They live in complex “fission-fusion” societies where group composition changes frequently, though they form strong long-term bonds, particularly between mothers and calves or pairs of adult males.
  • Speed & Diving: While they usually cruise at 3–7 mph, they can reach short bursts of speed up to 22–25 mph. While they prefer shallow water, they are capable of diving to depths exceeding 1,600 feet
